How to Organize Your Move and Minimize Expenses


Moving is a serious and costly business; whether you want it or not.

As it marks the beginning of your new life in a new place, you want to make sure that everything is in order. You don’t want to be scrambling about and squeezing things together in one box when the movers arrive because you’re not prepared.

On the other hand, it also won’t help if you’re going to be stressed to the point where it will take a toll on your physical, emotional, and mental disposition. In order to do that plan ahead and prepare a checklist to guide you on the things you need to accomplish for an easy moving experience.

1. Preparation is the key. Organization of your belongings is the first step to a successful moving. It ensures you have everything neatly packed, and when the movers come in to load your belongings, you know nothing will be left behind.

  • Prepare storage boxes and put all packing materials in a handy container.

The first thing to do is to gather boxes and storage bins. Make sure there is more than enough for all your things. Utilize any containers to save on buying new ones.

  • Take an inventory.

Make a list, and double check. Taking inventory of your items is essential. Not only will it organize your belongings, but it will also help you find out what can be disposed of so that you don’t have to lug everything with you in your new home. And you’ll know when it’s time to unpack if anything is missing.

It is also necessary to list down all your furniture, household appliances, equipment, and other major belongings to know how big the truck rental should be.

2. Pack carefully, and don’t be in a hurry. Because these are a lifetime’s worth of accumulated junks and whatnots, don’t be sloppy in your packing. Some of these things hold precious memories for you and your family.

  • Label each boxes.

3. Movers are essential. Hire a moving company. They are a great help, especially in transporting your white goods and large furniture. Make sure, however, that you’re hiring a reputable mover. It will save you the trouble and expense later on.

You can either get recommendations from families and friends or find one online. Follow it up by personally visiting their office and interviewing them.

4. Notify companies for change of address. You don’t want to waste your time retrieving mails and bills from your old home, or asking your previous landlord to gather them for you. As such, you need to inform the companies you need to advise about your new address.

  • Call banks and insurance for your billing statements, insurance payments, etc.

If you have credit cards, billing statements, and other payments, notify them of your new address. This will ensure you’ll still receive your statements regularly.

  • Update information on identification cards as well as your workplace.

Valid IDs are called that for a reason. It is necessary to update it to current information, so that in case of emergency, the right people will be contacted.

  • Inform your local internet, cable, and telephone providers plus other subscriptions about your change of address.

You don’t want to inconvenience yourself and them. Contact your service providers and notify them of your change of address. Make sure you do these two weeks before you move out, so they can properly schedule when to have your connections cut and when they can reconnect again to your new address.

If you have newspaper or magazine subscriptions, make sure you’ve informed them where to make their next delivery.

5. Don’t forget these other important things.

  • Make sure you have read your electric and water meters.

Reading your electric and water meter is important because it will ensure that you’ll pay the right amount and not be overcharged by your previous landlord.

  • Collect all house keys, and surrender them to your landlord.

For security purposes, you must ensure that you don’t have a copy of the house keys anymore and to surrender them to your landlord on your last day.

And finally, it’s MOVING day!

All your bags are packed, and you’re ready to go. After everything has been loaded into the moving truck, walk through the house and double check one last time to ensure the fuse box has been switched off and nothing has been left behind.
