In Spanish, the word población means town, which in the Philippines is a common term that refers to the central, downtown, old town, or central business district of a city or municipality. It may take up the area of a single barangay or multiple barangays, but one thing is consistent—it is always centrally and strategically located. Such is the case of Barangay Poblacion, Makati, which is the city’s traditional business district. It may not be as vibrant as the Makati central business district, but it definitely has its highlights and charm.
To start, Poblacion is where the Makati City Hall Complex is located, on a lot along J.P. Rizal Avenue donated by Ayala Land. In the early 2000s, then-Makati mayor Jejomar Binay instituted the construction of the 22-story City Hall of Makati behind the old one, practically making Poblacion as the center of Makati’s government. This area is also home to the Makati Regional Trial Court, Pio del Pilar National High School, and the Makati Pumping Station.
Barangay Poblacion is also home to the Makati Heritage District, an area bounded by Kalayaan Avenue, J.P. Rizal Street, P. Burgos Street, and R. Palma Street. This area houses the Museo ng Makati, which was built in 1918 and used to be Makati’s City Hall from 1918 to 1961; the Poblacion River Park; the Makati Science High School and the Makati City High School; and the Makati Parish Church, also known as the Saints Peter and Paul Church.
Although Poblacion is deeply rooted to its past, it is one of Makati’s most vibrant and modern neighborhoods. It is also thriving real estate hotspot. Poblacion is where one will find Rockwell Center, a 15.5-hectare mixed-use estate that is home to some of Makati’s most high-end condominium developments and it also houses the Power Plant Mall, an upscale shopping complex right in the middle of the development. On the other side of Poblacion is Century City, a 3.4-hectare development of Century Properties, which houses some of Makati’s newest and most upscale condo developments, including Gramercy Residences (currently the tallest residential building in the Philippines), Knightsbridge Residences, Milano Residences, and the newly opened Trump Tower Manila. Century City also houses Century City Mall, 17,000-sqm high-end shopping complex.
