Broker of the Month: Cristina Cuyco

Sometimes, it comes as an unexpected but pleasant surprise to us when the career we choose to pursue feels like a natural fit to us. Such is what Hoppler’s Broker of the Month, Cristina Cuyco, can say about her career as she reflects on her experiences as a real estate broker in the last 7 years and as a partner broker. In this interview, she shares the most valuable lessons and insights she has learned, as well as advice on how to succeed in the industry.

1. Can you tell us about yourself and what made you pursue a career in real estate?

I became a licensed broker in 2011, but it’s not until 2013 that I became a full time, practicing one.  I got into it because of my sister, who founded One Eon Properties in 2007. Before I was a real estate broker, I was in the corporate world of banking and retail marketing and visual merchandising working for various companies with different roles,  teaching me the importance of professionalism and perseverance. When I decided to join my sister’s company and make my being a licensed broker a profession, it came as a surprise that it will lead me to a job with a strong income level and a career path I am  naturally suited for.

2. What inspires you in this line of work?

I love to travel, I love to meet people, and this job allows me to do just that. Even though I don’t travel as much now, I still get to meet people of different backgrounds and cultures, and I get to tell them what I love about the Philippines. Majority of my clients are expats. I’ve been an expat myself, so I understand what my clients are looking for.

Being in real estate isn’t forced; everything comes natural to me. I believe when you work, you must come from a place of honesty and sincerity, and that comes naturally for me, because I know what it means to be new in a foreign place. It’s just a great joy for me when I finally get to find a place for my clients that they could call home and to see them settle down and start enjoying the beauty of the Philippines.

3. How did you first encounter Hoppler?

When I came into the industry, my sister already had connections, and one of the networks she revolved in was Hoppler. Early on, I attended a company event, and now I’m in the network of one of the Sales Directors of the Hoppler.

4. What made you join Hoppler as a Partner Broker?

Our company is very comfortable with Hoppler because of the professionalism and integrity they have when they work. We’ve stayed with them as well because we can post our listings on Hoppler’s website, which is mutually beneficial for our company and Hoppler.

One thing I like about working with Hoppler is that you know that the other Partner Brokers have been screened before joining the network. So even if I haven’t met the broker I’ll be working with yet, I already know that I can trust them.

5. How has Hoppler helped you ever since you joined the network?

I recently closed a deal with Hoppler. It was a challenging one, and it involved a lot of other people. I was co-brokering with one of Hoppler’s in-house property consultants. I was confident in working with her because I knew I could trust her. There was teamwork involved, and we got through the difficulties.

 6. Can you name qualities you think every real estate broker should possess?

As much as possible you need to be open to any opportunities, any learning experiences. Whether its people or a situation, it’s a matter of how you deal with things that helps you avoid getting burned out. One trait that constantly gets sharpened is patience, because you can’t push for what you want. You have to give options to your clients – the best options, if possible.

“I have realized over the years that as long as you’re doing your best and you work with good business ethics – most especially honesty, respect, and transparency – then there’s really nothing to be afraid of.”

Each day, I try to optimize my faith and hope and dedicate it to God.

7. What goals do you still have for your career?

Make the business grow because its growth will help other people.

8. One thing you want to impart to younger brokers.

Do all your work in good faith. Value your reputation, because that is what will keep your career going. I can attest to that. Referrals are affirmation that you’re doing your work well. Aim for that referral – money is important, yes, but long term, don’t always think of finances, but the referral that comes with it. Referrals are the product of the hard work you put in.

Cristina attributes her continued success to the values she upholds as she works with her clients and partners. It is Cristina’s desire that all real estate brokers never waver in their commitment to give their best effort in their work.
