Essential Strategies for Moving In

Moving in is an exciting experience – but it could also get emotionally and physically taxing. There’s an overwhelming amount of work to be done, and many times, exhaustion, stress, and the shortage of time take away the joys of moving in. Having foresight plays a major role throughout the entire process, because it keeps you prepared for any problems that might arise. This is why it’s important to develop a coherent plan for your move in.

Here are 6 essential tips for laying the groundwork to help ease your move!

  1. Pin down your move date

Whether it’s urgent or not, it’s important to pin down your move date as this will dictate how you’ll be creating your moving plan. Start with deciding exactly when you want to be completely moved in, and work within this time frame.

  1. Decide on how you’ll be moving in

Will you utilize the services of a moving company? Will you be moving in on your own? Will you be moving with the help of friends?

It’s possible that there’s too much work to be done (and too many things to pack!) that you’ll need to use the services of a moving company. However, make sure that the cost would remain within your budget.

  1. Make a moving inventory

Take inventory of all the things that need to be moved. You can do this per area of your home to give you an idea of how many items are needed to be packed. By making a moving inventory, you guarantee that you won’t forget any items – especially those of great value.

Making your moving inventory also forces you to do a thorough cleaning of your home. While making an inventory list, you can also begin to see which items you don’t need anymore.

  1. Organize your moving in timeline

Once you’ve had a good grasp of the items you’ll be moving, it’s now time to organize your moving in schedule to ensure that you’ll be fully moved in by your target date.

It’s best to begin thinking about your move in two months prior to the target date. Start your calendar from 8 weeks before, and develop a checklist of things to do. Lay down your plans for each week and then for each day on the final week.

  1. Pack systematically and resourcefully

The earliest you can pack, the better! Even if you’ll be partnering with a moving company, it is advised to pack the more valuable items on your own. Pack your kitchenware and label the box as fragile. Be cost-efficient and use blankets or towels to wrap valuable artworks or lamp bases. Disassemble furniture and tape the nuts and bolts together.

  1. Pack a First Night box

Lastly, pack a First Night box. This is a box that includes essential items that you’ll need from the first night of the move until you’ve completely moved in. The First Night box meets your needs at the time when items are still being transferred to your new home. Some items that should be in your First Night box are clothes, pillows, blankets, and necessary toiletries; snacks, paper plates, and disposable utensils; flashlights, candles, and garbage bags; and important records belonging to you and your family.

Moving may not always be the smoothest-sailing experience, but being one step ahead will help make it easier. Don’t let stress overshadow the milestone of moving into a new home!
